I asked for comfort,
God gifted me with pain
so I could learn endurance.
I asked for relief,
God placed more weight upon my shoulders
so I could discover true strength.
I asked for safety,
God sent life’s threats
so I would not fear the storms.
I asked for power,
God gave me hardships
so I would be forged unbreakable.
I asked for wisdom,
God set me amidst deceit
so I might know the purity of honesty.
I asked for courage,
God unveiled my fears
so I could transcend them with a steadfast heart.
I asked for health,
God allowed me illness
so I might cherish every breath.
I asked for honor,
God clothed me in humiliation
so I would be worthy of being exalted with humility.
I asked for victory,
God gave me defeat
so I could learn the meaning of patience.
I asked for wealth,
God sowed me in scarcity
so I would grasp the essence of sufficiency.
I asked for peace,
God tested me with conflicts
so I might become a soul that calms.
I asked for ease,
God led me through difficult roads
so my mind and heart would shine sharper.
I asked for love,
God brought me to wounded souls
so I could learn to nurture and to give.
I asked for happiness,
God sent me sorrow
so my life would be purified from vanity.
And I realized,
my prayers were never denied—
they were only answered in the most perfect way.
God is All-Knowing,
while I… am only a servant learning to trust.
